JBSCE Programmes
The Johannesburg Business School Centre for Entrepreneurship (JBSCE) has a unique model and approach to entrepreneurship. We build on our Integrated Business Development Model (IBDM) and take an entrepreneurial approach to our programmes.
Over the years we have developed long-term partnerships that have allowed us to present exceptional offerings for our entrepreneurs. Our partners share our values in skills development among previously disadvantaged youth.
Short Learning Programmes (SLPs)
The Raymond Ackerman Academy of Entrepreneurial Development (RAA) is a 6-month full-time programme. To enter the programme the candidates are required to have Matric and they must demonstrate an adequate level of literacy and numeracy. In addition, they must articulate why the programme would be of benefit to their personal and/or business development. The RAA seeks to encourage South African youth to become economically active by either: motivating them to further their education; securing meaningful employment; or, starting a successful enterprise. On completion of the RAA Entrepreneurial Development programme, the alumni are eligible for selection to enter the Raymond Ackerman Mentoring Programme (RAAMP). The RAAMP recruits 30 Alumni from RAA per year. The programme duration is one year with focused activities every 2nd week. The RAAMP capacitates early-stage entrepreneurs to achieve enterprise targets such as Job Creation; Turnover Enhancement; Market Enhancement; Access to Finance; Information Dissemination; and, Technical Skills Development. RAAMP works in close collaboration with both the Internal (UJ) and External Entrepreneurship Ecosystem to accelerate their beneficiaries sustainably to the next level.
Outcomes
The Raymond Ackerman Academy aims to achieve three outcomes;
- To motivate the youth to further their education;
- To help the youth to secure meaningful employment;
- To help the youth from disadvantaged communities to establish a successful enterprise

Purpose
The purpose of this programme is to give small business owners confidence to engage with big businesses or enterprises, identify and exploit opportunities, be empowered with business skills to plan and manage growth and this will include budgeting and cash flow management issues.
Outcomes
Students should be able to
- describe and explain strategies used to grow businesses or enterprises;
- evaluate the impact of the regulatory environment on efforts at managing businesses or enterprises;
- critically evaluate and analyse market opportunities to retain and increase a customer base;
- describe and implement methods used in managing cash flow to effectively grow a business;
- plan and implement effective operations systems to effectively manage business venture growth; and
- discuss and implement people management approaches to motivate workers towards achieving business venture goals.

- The business must have operated for a minimum of two years.

Purpose
The Asset-Based Socio-Economic Development (ABSED) programme, offered by the Johannesburg Business School Centre for Entrepreneurship (JBSCE) aims to challenge the conventional needs-based mind set, to encourage a more creative community-based development.

- Understand a new and exciting way to view community development and unlock the ability for communities and individuals to become sustainable.
- Learn practical tools that you can use to make a difference and improve your impact in the developmental space.

- The difference between a needs-based vs. assets-based approach and what is meant by citizen-led development;
- The types of poverty;
- The principles needed to move from community dependence to community self-reliance through a process of mapping skills;
- Identifying and mobilising of assets;
- Sustainability in the asset-based approach;
- The use of tools to build economic literacy;
- Stakeholder involvement clarification;
- Planning, monitoring and evaluation;
- Sustainability practices; and
- Measurement tool.

The Emerging Social Enterprise Management has been specifically designed to develop Social Sector Leaders in NPOs, NGOs, Cooperative and Social Enterprises.
Content:
- Basic Computer Skills;
- Introduction to the Social Economy;
- Corporate Governance in a social enterprise;
- Marketing your social enterprise;
- Sustainable strategies;
- Multiple Streams of Income;
- Finance and budgeting;
- Human Relations; and
- Drawing up a Social Business Plan.
This programme will help you to:
- Use business management tools to improve the performance of the emerging social enterprises and/or non-profit organisation you are managing.
- Learn practical skills that you can use to make an impact in the developmental space.

The Financial Management and Costing is a 5 Day Programme aimed to prepare the small business practitioner with the fundamental knowledge, insight and the skills needed to plan and implement an appropriate financial costing practice within their business.
The programme consists of the following modules:

Purpose
The purpose of the Artisanal Master Programme is to provide artisans from various industries with the opportunity to advance from being purely technical experts to being at a master level in their technical field. This will be achieved by providing knowledge in a defined range of business related areas and applied skills. The purpose is furthermore, to provide career progression opportunities and to upskill artisans in business development studies as well as to be mentored by industry experts. The ultimate objective for Master Artisans is to be role models, teachers and custodians of the industry, and to become actively involved in the economy applying the business practice skills in newly formed small business or as employees in business entities.

- Have an understanding of the marketing environment in which your business operates.
- Comprehend consumers and their decision-making behaviour when making purchases.
- Grasp the different promotional decisions that are important to marketing decision making. ·
- Comprehend the different distribution decisions that are important to marketing decision making.
- Apply customer service excellence and create a customer relationship management system that is beneficial to the growth of the business.
- Implement effective business communication both internally and externally.
- Apply systems thinking when creating a company vision and a systems-driven team.

Purpose
The purpose of Entrepreneurial Development Programme is to provide students with the knowledge and skills to formulate business ideas. Furthermore, to develop business plans and to implement and create viable business ventures that would enable prospective students, especially previously disadvantaged youth to become active participants in the economy. In addition, various life skill training is included as part of the programme to assist students to make informed decisions regarding their entrepreneurial development or career advancement.
Outcomes
- Implement effective business communication in a business environment, both internally and externally.
- Understand and discuss the fundamentals of marketing management.
- Describe role of the compliance and explain the need for governance and control in relation to business
- Understand the value-adding role of the human resources management (HRM) function in the organisation.
- Apply the general management functions within the organisation.
- Apply the fundamentals of finance management, basic costing and the relevant compliance for a small business.
- Know and understand the interrelationship between operations function and other functions within an organisation.
- Gain insight to the benefits of entrepreneurship and identify the viability of a specific business idea or innovation.
- Describe and understand the definition of strategic management and be able to apply strategies and identify gaps in the market.
- Demonstrate the added valued by the life skills as set out in the module.

Purpose
Social entrepreneurs are entrepreneurial, innovative, and “transformatory” individuals who are also: leaders, storytellers, people managers, visionary opportunists, and alliance builders. They recognize a social problem and organize, create, and manage a venture to make social change. Leadbeater (1997)
Outcomes
On completion of this course, if all criteria is met you will be allowed entry into a three year Diploma in Small Business Management, access to a social economy network, industry experts and advice, knowledge and skills with practical examples.
